Usborne Books to Supplement 1st Grade // Science
Choosing a curriculum for your homeschool is so important! Do you know what else is important? Choosing high-quality books that: expand those themed units, further your child’s wonder, and inspire them to dive deeper!
In this new little series, I’ll be sharing with you a few UBAM books that I’ve been using to support our 1st-grade curriculum!
To start, I planned for the year and wrote down all the different things we’d be learning. I took a few units I knew my child would love (animals, weather, etc.) and picked a UBAM book to pair with it. In future posts, I’ll share what I’m using to supplement: Life Science, US History, Math, Language Arts, and Social Emotional learning - all for 1st grade!
1st Grade Science Books:
🦋 1,000 THINGS TO SPOT IN NATURE // From soaring birds and towering trees high above your head to busy bugs and cozy burrows found beneath your feet, the natural world is full of treasures to be discovered. This book takes you across jungles, over deserts, through gardens, and under the ocean to see exactly 1,000 amazing things found in nature. The book takes children through lots of different habitats.
🌧 FIRST QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS, WHAT MAKES IT RAIN? // These stylish, highly illustrated, interactive books are perfect for sharing with young children, and they introduce science concepts using a friendly lift-the-flap format.
🌈 SEE INSIDE WEATHER AND CLIMATE (We have an older title but the one linked is comparable) // This book tours of the land, sea, and skies to discover where weather comes from. Peer into a thundercloud, follow the path of a hurricane, visit the coldest place on Earth, and find out what the weather might be like tomorrow.
🦍 LIFESIZE BABY ANIMALS // Step into this book to discover how YOU measure up against some of the world’s most incredible baby animals in this playful introduction to the natural world. Come face-to-face with a baby black bear and cozy up with baby red pandas!
🪺 PEAK INSIDE A BIRD’S NEST // Peek into a bird's nest to see what the bird is looking after. See eggs hatching and the life of a baby bird in a nest. Peek into all kinds of other bird nests too, from sociable weaver birds' giant communal nests to the teeniest tiniest hummingbird nest. Some birds don't have nests, so where do they keep their eggs? Meet an emperor penguin to see!
🦕 ARE DINOSAURS REAL? // Explore the world of dinosaurs through the eyes of a curious child and become a dinosaur detective. Lift the flaps to find out what dinosaurs really looked like, how big they were, what they ate... and what became of them.
🌲 LIFT-THE-FLAP TREES // What kind of tree grows in the sea? How tall are the tallest trees? Which tree can change how its leaves taste? This flap book holds the answers, along with masses of other amazing tree facts, and can tell you why we need trees - and why they need our help.
These are all the books we’re using this semester for science! If you have a specific unit study or subject you’d like to supplement with books from my bookshop, let me know via email or Instagram message @onemorebookmama! I’d be happy to send you some book recommendations.
